Dark Cep Boletus aereus

Edible

Boletaceae

Graphic Pavement Mushroom.JPG

A wonderful and extremely tasty mushroom. Young specimens, such as the one pictured here, are particularly highly prized, but it is fairly uncommon, growing only in mature broad-leaved woodlands. More restraint than usual is required with this species, and I am (sort of) proud to say that the one above was the only specimen I picked out of the thirty I found that day. There are a handful of species which look similar, the chief of which is Boletus pinophilus, though this grows only with pines and is more orange in colour. It, too, is edible and good.
